Brown Brothers Letters
In letter books, the Brown Brothers' clerks copied all the firm's correspondence. According to the letters covering the period between 1825 and 1827, Brown Brothers dealt with 163 different firms in dozens of ports. Details are fascinating. Letters tell British exporters that painted mugs are "undesirable" in New York, as is mustard seed in green bottles.
